Do you know if you’re actually applying your skincare products in the correct order? The order in which you apply them can impact their effectiveness and absorption into the skin. Here’s a breakdown of the order you should be applying your skincare products, and why.
When it comes to your skin, sometimes less is more. There’s no need for a 10-step skincare regimen. When it comes down to the basics everyone needs, it’s just a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen.
Layering on other products like toner, eye creams and serums may be optional-depending on your individual skin needs. To avoid irritating your skin with too much product, your routine shouldn’t include more than five products.
When it comes to which product follows the other, the general rule is to apply lightest to thickest. As thinner products can’t penetrate heavier products, the thinner(lighter) ones should come before the heavier(thicker) ones. For example, applying a thin serum after a thick moisturizer would practically render the serum useless.
First, you should always cleanse your skin before you can apply any other skincare product. A gentle cleanser like our Pearl Facial Cleanser removes dirt, oil and makeup buildup that can clog pores and prevent other products from absorbing.
Using too much cleanser can irritate and dry out your skin, so apply a small amount and massage it into your skin using a cotton pad. Make sure to rinse it off after with lukewarm water.
Next, apply your toner. While it may be considered optional, a toner can help balance your skin’s pH levels and tightens pores after cleansing. It also helps other products you apply after to penetrate better and work more effectively.
Dab some toner onto a cotton pad and massage it onto your face in circular motions.
Serums are packed with active ingredients that are designed to penetrate deeply into the skin. Apply a small amount of serum to your skin after toning and before applying any creams. Make sure you choose a serum that addresses your skin concerns.
Most people do not require eye creams. Your eye area is already receiving the care it needs if you’re using a moisturizer and sunscreen. If you do choose to use one anyway, use your ring finger to apply a small amount of eye cream under and around your eyes before moisturizing.
After you’ve applied all your serums and eye creams, the next step is to apply your moisturizer. This helps to lock in all the active ingredients and keep your skin hydrated. For best results, use a moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type and is packed with nourishing ingredients like our range of moisturizing body butters.
Applying sunscreen should be the last step in your skincare routine, ideally in the morning. This is the most critical step in any skincare routine as it helps protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
Following this order and using the right amount of each product consistently will help you achieve the clearest, healthiest-looking complexion. Because you are a GEM.
